The Heart Behind Period Stories

My Story

Welcome to Period Stories my name is J. Krystal Ascencio, MD, MBA, FACOG.

Period stories is a passion project birthed from a desire to help women find community.  A place where our questions can be answered and thoughts shared.  I migrated from Jamaica West Indies at age 12.  Raised as one of four children.  This move left an indelible mark on me and my family socially, emotionally and economically.  Through this life changing experience I felt a strong call toward medicine and recognized a strong education was the only means of reaching this goal.  After completing my medical education at the University of Virginia school of medicine I pursued residency training as an obstetrician and gynecologist at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Flushing, New York.  The training was an eye opening experience.  There was so much I had not been exposed to as a young woman that would have helped me navigate the changes I had been experiencing as my body evolved.  I have been a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist for over 20 years working in private practice, group practice and hospital settings.  I knew that change starts with the individual and in order to better understand the business of medicine I pursued my masters in business administration at University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Today I am committed to women’s health and wellness.  At all phases of life women struggle in this age where we lack community.  Women need each other because we grow and learn in community.  Through education women can be empowered because women’s health equals population health.  We birth the next generation and it is imperative that we give them tools to navigate this world.  Let’s collaborate.  Share your stories.  Knowledge is power!
